Up north, keeping the Holiday season involves bringing a little life into our homes to counter the drab blahs of winter. Holly sprigs, pine boughs, and poinsettias fill the home with greens and reds while outside bare, black branches scrape at the gray skies.

In subtropical Florida these traditions are unnecessary–we need not huddle indoors under tacked up bits of evergreen. For our first Christmas in the Sunshine State, we would be exchanging the cold and bleak December for the balmy, lush jungle. To inaugurate our arrival, a warm winter hike under tiny-leaved oaks, around spiky palmettos, and through waving ferns was in order.

We had been cruising the Ruskin/Apollo Beach region of Rt. 41 in search of some vittles. Our visit earlier that day to the Manatee Viewing Center had us peckish. I had a peculiar craving for seafood or beef but I was open to anything and thought we might find something unique and nifty along this old Tamiami highway.

Where the Manatee Play in Tampa Bay

Our first road trip as Floridians was to see the manatees and we hadn’t even visited family yet.

Our move to Florida from Pennsylvania was complete. The truck has been refueled, swept out, and returned to Penske. The hole that I–that is–that the tree limb put in the roof has been disclosed to the manager on duty. Our boxed belongings are neatly stacked in the garage and being systematically emptied out as we require the contents. The furniture is arranged, the television is connected and the refrigerator and pantry are stocked. Our kitties are settled in and acclimating to the new digs.
